The first quarter of 2026 was a delightful time for anime fans.
The Winter 2026 anime season is almost nearing its end, and it’s the perfect time to look back at what it had to offer. Although the season was mostly filled with numerous amazing romance anime series, there were some truly unique titles that stunned the audience with their charm. If you are someone who was waiting for the season to end to bite into the cream of the crop, then let this list be the guide to your next watchlist!
The Daily Life of a Part-time Torturer

Even the title of the anime fills you with intrigue, but don’t worry, the show doesn’t delve into the inner workings of torture. Instead, it focuses on four co-workers who work as torturers in a world where torturing is a viable method to extract useful information from criminals. Shiu and Cero are the seniors who are joined later by two adorable part timers, Mikke and Hugh.
There is no particular story in the anime, as it only follows the various problems that arise in the workplace. Their bond is sweet and charming, even though there is a looming backdrop of torture. Although it’s quite normal and slice-of-life in its nature, the anime manages to be comedic and absurd in some instances, thanks to its theme. Overall, this series is a perfect treat if you are looking for something lighthearted yet unique.
The Demon King's Daughter is Too Kind!!

If we were to update the cutest anime children list today, then Doux would certainly make it to the top 10. She is the titular demon king’s daughter in this adorable fantasy series. Unlike her fearsome father and his equally menacing allies, Doux is the tiny demonic embodiment of sunshine. When it becomes apparent that Doux is indeed extremely kind and doesn’t quite grasp the concept of being evil, her father asks his secretary Jahi to train her in the ways of a terrifying and cruel demon.
However, no matter how many violent lessons Jahi tries to teach Doux, she seems to turn all of them into a show of kindness and friendship. And truly, who can blame people for falling in love with her adorable charm? Doux won the hearts of not only the characters in the anime, but also those who have been watching her on screen. The power of kindness and friendship is not so cheesy when it comes from the most adorable daughter of the demon king.
Kaya-chan Isn't Scary

If you loved Doux, then you will also love Kaya, who is equally as adorable as a five year old kid attending kindergarten classes. But unlike the previous title, Kaya-chan Isn’t Scary is menacing and terrifying in its horror. At first we learn that Kaya is a problem child in the kindergarten, often stopping her classmates from using certain rides or toys, earning their scorn. But soon we realise this is because she can see all the evil spirits that plague the school, and is trying to protect her friends from them.
Kaya is an incredibly strong psychic, although she doesn’t understand her powers quite well at such a young age. She still tries her best to save everyone around her from evil, which will make you fall in love with her. However, there is a much sinister overarching plot involving Kaya’s mother brewing in the background, which will give you an unsettling feeling common with horror titles. Although it doesn’t delve deep into disturbing imagery, Kaya-chan Isn’t Scary manages to be true to the core of horror, and you can’t help but watch it with nail-biting anticipation.
Kunon the Sorcerer Can See

As you can see, the Winter 2026 season is filled with lovable characters, and the protagonist of this series, Kunon Gurion, is no different. Born blind, Kunon sets out to achieve the almost-impossible task of creating eyes for himself using water magic. Kunon is an extremely gifted sorcerer, and surpasses his master in just five months. Although his task is something nobody has ever achieved before, you can’t help but root for him after seeing his hardworking and kind nature.
Despite his disability, Kunon pushes the limits of his own powers to achieve his goal. The characters around him also can’t help but cheer him on due to his loving nature. Through his magic, Kunon gains the ability to perceive colour, and is called to the royal court thanks to his reputation. There, he starts learning under the kingdom’s most powerful magician and gets closer to his aim everyday. If you are looking for a feel-good fantasy anime with a lovable protagonist and amazing magic, then Kunon the Sorcerer Can See will be the perfect treat for you.
You and I Are Polar Opposites

We are now entering the territory of romance, and this season was truly a treasure trove for romcom lovers. You and I Are Polar Opposites focuses on Suzuki and Tani, two high school students who are as different as they can be. The outgoing and popular Suzuki often feels jealous of Tani, who despite being a loner, never shies away from speaking his mind. As their interest in each other grows into love, the two start dating after a sweet yet unexpected confession.
What I love about this anime is it doesn’t spend too much time on the romance brewing between the main characters. It also focuses on the day-to-day problems of the side characters, and we see all of them grow into better versions of themselves thanks to their friends and family. Despite its realistic themes, the anime successfully retains the youthful charm typical of a romcom and makes you want to root for all the characters, all with their different personalities and dispositions.
Sentenced to be a Hero

Amidst the crowd of romcoms and tranquil fantasies, some action-oriented shows still managed to shine this season. The most notable new anime that managed to grab the attention of viewers is Sentenced to be a Hero. It takes place in a world where individuals convicted of serious crimes are given the position of heroes, where they have to fight against the demonic entities. But it’s not as glamorous as it seems, as even if the heroes die, they are brought back to life and forced to fight again in a never-ending circle of violence.
The protagonist, Xylo Forbartz, is a former knight commander and one such ‘hero’. During one of his missions, he meets Teoritta, a goddess who wants him to become her knight. Xylo reluctantly agrees to this arrangement to escape a particularly brutal demon attack. The two of them, alongside the rest of the Penal Hero Unit 9004, go on a revenge spree against those who wronged them. With a fantastical setting and great animation, the nature of violent encounters truly come alive in this anime. If you are a fan of brutal action, then this might be the perfect show for you this season.
Tamon’s B-Side

Another romcom of the season which leans heavily into the comedic side of the genre, Tamon’s B-Side follows high school student Utage, who is a die-hard fan of Tamon Fukuhara, a member of the popular new boyband F/ACE. One day, Utage ends up at Tamon’s apartment while working her job as a hired cleaner. To her utter shock, Utage finds out that unlike the confident and suave idol Tamon, the real Tamon is a gloomy and negative shut-in, who suffers from terrible social anxiety. This dynamic makes for a very entertaining watch.
But being a true fan of Tamon, Utage takes it upon herself to make sure he is healthy and prepared for all his upcoming idol jobs. Slowly, they find a sense of camaraderie… and maybe something more? The hilarity of the series mainly stems from the gap moe of the titular character. However, Utage soon finds out that every member of F/ACE has a B-Side much like Tamon. Filled with absurd comedic scenes and a growing love, you can’t help but feel warmth in your heart as you watch Utage and Tamon’s story unfold.
Journal with Witch

Starting off as a mildly interesting new series, Journal with Witch was able to become one of the most celebrated anime of this season due to its earnest and realistic storytelling. It follows a 15-year-old girl named Asa, who loses both of her parents in a tragic accident and starts living with her 35-year-old aunt, Makio, who is a shut-in novelist. Despite not having a good relationship with her mother, Makio welcomes Asa as best as she could, but it soon turns out that living together was not going to be an easy feat for them given their different dispositions.
The series delves into the topics of loss, grief, friendship, love, and many more emotions we regularly encounter as human beings. It’s not overbearing in its lessons, and only wishes to show two characters who grow to like each other despite their differences. Asa’s grief comes in waves, and as a young girl, she learns slowly how to deal with her feelings. On the other hand, Makio learns how to live with another person and make space for their feelings and needs in her life. Overall, the series manages to invoke empathy from the audience, something that’s not very easy to achieve.
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 2

When the first season came out in 2023, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End became a fan-favourite. With its pleasing animation and gentle yet sometimes grim storytelling, Frieren and her party made a lasting impression on the audience. That’s why the return of the beloved series was so eagerly anticipated by the fans. Thankfully, Madhouse didn’t disappoint and it became a smash hit again when the second season debuted in January.
The journey of Frieren, Fern, and Stark took them to the northern part of the country in this season, which was the main reason behind Fern becoming a first-class mage. As expected, the party met with several formidable enemies, including demons. The fight scenes are as smooth and visually stunning, and the storytelling remains as somberly peaceful as ever. The way Frieren weaves reality together with fantasy is truly a marvel.
JUJUTSU KAISEN Season 3

When we are talking about returning series, we can’t skip the third season of JUJUTSU KAISEN. When the anime, based on Gege Akutami’s manga, came out in 2020, fans were immediately drawn to the dark and violent world that it brought. The second season came out at the end of 2023, and ever since then, fans have been eagerly waiting for the series to return. Much like Frieren, JUJUTSU KAISEN Season 3 exceeded the expectations set by its predecessors.
It is very apparent that the MAPPA animators worked hard on the series, as the animation seems better than even the first two seasons. The fight scenes, especially the one involving Maki and Naoya broke the internet with how viral it became. Now that the Culling Game arc is in full swing, fans are waiting to see how the next fights of the story are animated.
