Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of the Mermaid Island has reclaimed its top spot again.
Last week, the new magical anime movie “Puella Magi Madoka Magica -Walpurgisnacht Rising-” opened at the top spot of the Japanese box office and made JP¥ 930 million (US$ 5.812 million) in the first weekend. A week later, the film has surpassed JP¥ 1.53 billion ( appx. US$ 9.9 million) in just 10 days since its release. Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of the Mermaid Island has once again reclaimed the #1 spot at the Japanese box office in its seventh weekend.

Although it opened at the top spot of the Japanese box office on 28 August, the new Puella Magi Madoka Magica movie slipped to third place in its second weekend. After 10 days since its release, the film has made JP¥ 1.53 billion ( appx. US$ 9.9 million) with more than 900,000 admissions.
Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of the Mermaid Island is once again back at the top of the list in its seventh weekend. Previously, the movie slipped to second place in its second weekend when Spider-Man: Brand New Day came out and claimed the top spot. But the popularity of Chiikawa in Japan prevails again, making it take the #1 spot at the box office. The movie’s cumulative gross after 45 days is JP¥ 13.9 billion (appx. US$ 90.16 million), making it the highest grossing movie of 2026 in the Japanese box office.
