After ruling over the top spot of the Japanese box-office for a few weeks, Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of the Mermaid Island has finally been dethroned by the new anime movie “Puella Magi Madoka Magica -Walpurgisnacht Rising-”. The new magical girl movie premiered on 28 August, and took over the no. 1 spot at the box office for the 28-30 August weekend.

The Puella Magi Madoka Magica -Walpurgisnacht Rising- movie opens with great success
As per the report from Kogyo Tsushinsha’s weekend ranking, The Puella Magi Madoka Magica -Walpurgisnacht Rising- movie has surpassed JP¥ 930 million (US$ 5.812 million) in just three days since its release with over 530,000 admissions over 291 theatres in Japan. In a new update from the anime’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, it has been revealed that the movie has already passed JP¥ 1 billion (US$ 6.249 million) as of 1 September, 2026.
After staying at the top of the Japanese box office for three consecutive weekends, Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of the Mermaid Island has finally been shoved to the second spot. This weekend, the movie made JP¥ 547 million (US$ 3.4 million), bringing the film’s cumulative earning in Japan to JP¥ 12.23 billion (US$ 76.57 million) in 28 days. It has beaten the 38-day gross revenue of Detective Conan: Fallen Angel of the Highway (JP¥ 11.9 billion/ US$ 74.48 million), and is the highest grossing Japanese film of 2026 so far.
The Chiikawa movie now ranks 37th in Japan’s all-time box office chart. It has surpassed Hayao Miyazaki's The Wind Rises (2013 / JP¥ 12.02 billion) and HAIKYU!! The Dumpster Battle (2024 / JP¥ 11.64 billion).
