The film is the feature-length directorial debut of Shingo Yamashita.
It was announced in November that Netflix is bringing an original anime movie to the screens in January. The film, titled Cosmic Princess Kaguya!, is the feature-length directorial debut of Shingo Yamashita.
In a recent update, Netflix revealed that the movie will premiere on the platform on 22 January, 2026. It’s a modernised retelling of the classic Japanese legend “The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter”which takes place in the virtual realm Tsukuyomi/
Cosmic Princess Kaguya! anime movie cast, staff, and other details
The new cast member joining the movie is:
- Rie Kugimiya as Fushi (a fluffy sea slug who’s also Yachiyo’s partner)
The previously announced cast of the film includes:
- Yūko Natsuyoshi as Kaguya
- Anna Nagase as Iroha
- Saori Hayami as Yachiyo
The movie will feature iconic vocaloid songs as its soundtrack. The new trailer previews one of the songs ‘Watashiha Watashinokotoga Suki’ performed by Yūko Natsuyoshi as Kaguya and composed by HoneyWorks, and the theme song ‘Ex-Otogibanashi’ performed by Saori Hayami as Yachiyo and composed by Ryo (supercell).
Shingo Yamashita is directing the movie Studio Chromato and Studio Colorido. Hechima and Akihiro Nagae are designing the characters, with the former handling the Tsukuyomi designs and the latter designing the real world characters. The movie will feature songs by Vocaloid producers Ryo (supercell), kz (livetune), 40mP, HoneyWorks, Aqu3ra, and yuigot.
It has been announced that leading up to the film’s premiere on 22 January, music videos by the Vocaloid producers will stream every Friday. The schedule for the streams are:

kz (livetune) is composing the song ‘Reply’. The single for ‘Ex-Otogibanashi’ will be released on 23 January, 2026. A collection of remixes based on the movie’s songs will be released on the same day. Titled CPK! Remix, this collection will feature songs by Hatsune Miku and Nagi Yanagi.
Cosmic Princess Kaguya! is also getting manga and novel adaptations
It has also been confirmed that the story of Cosmic Princess Kaguya! is getting a manga adaptation by Taro Yoneda. The first two chapters of the manga will launch on 9 January 2026, in Kadokawa's Comptiq magazine.
Moreover, the movie will also have a novel adaptation written by Naruto Kiriyama and illustrated by Asao Urata. The book will be published on 30 January. Director Shingo Yamashita is overseeing both of these projects.
