The “Evangelion: 30+; 30th Anniversary of Evangelion” festival commemorating the 30th anniversary of Hideaki Anno's “Neon Genesis Evangelion” ended on a surprising high note on Monday (23 February), with the reveal of a brand new anime series now in the works.

The project, teased as the franchise's “Next Genesis” also unveiled its preliminary staff, headlined by acclaimed game director Yoko Taro, of Square Enix's Nier series, as the series' scriptwriter and script supervisor.

The new Evangelion anime is set to revitalise franchise

Although the announcement of the new anime series only revealed its production staff, the new content itself is a treat to longtime fans of the Evangelion franchise.

This project is the latest addition in over four years, and is also the third anime series within the franchise's timeline since the premiere of the original Neon Genesis Evangelion back in 1995. The franchise itself has a dedicated cult following, marking itself as a tour de force within the sci-fi mecha genre of anime.

The anime project, which is yet to unveil its title, will be helmed by directors Kazuya Tsurumaki, who worked on the Rebuild of Evangelion movie series, and Toko Yabe, who acted as assistant director in the Evangelion: 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon A Time. Keiichi Okabe, who composed the soundtrack for both the Nier game and anime franchise, will compose the music. Production will be done in collaboration between Anno's Studio Khara, and CloverWorks.

It is currently unknown if the upcoming series will follow the new timeline set by the Rebuild of Evangelion film series, take a new direction altogether, or if it will follow the alternate reality featured in the exclusive animated short featuring Asuka that premiered during the 30th anniversary event. We can however, expect new updates in the future.
