On Wednesday, 14 January, the results of the 71st Shogakukan Manga Award were officially announced. Amidst the five winning titles was one fan-favourite shonen action manga Dandadan by Yukinobu Tatsu. Beginning in 1955, the Shogakukan Manga Award is one of the most prestigious and oldest manga awards in Japan.

Fate Rewinder

Story and Art: Fuuta Kimura
Created by Fuuta Kimura, the Fate Rewinder manga is being published in the Monthly CoroCoro Comic magazine by Shogakukan. The series began publishing in 2022 and has 11 volumes so far. Fate Rewinder was also nominated for the 69th Shogakukan manga award. An anime adaptation by BONES Film has also been announced.

Tamura Ryuhei’s sci-fi manga began serialising in Shogakukan’s Monthly Gene-X magazine in 2023. The series has seven volumes so far.

Created by Yukinobu Tatsu, this beloved shonen, action, sci-fi manga series already has a very successful anime adaptation by Science SARU. The manga began publishing back in 2021 on the Shonen Jump+ web magazine. Shueisha has published 22 volumes of the series so far. A third season of the anime has already been confirmed.

Natsumi Eguchi’s supernatural manga began publishing in 2021 on Kodansha’s weekly Morning magazine. It has 11 volumes so far. The series was also adapted into a 12-episode anime by Brain’s Base in 2025.

A shady, self-proclaimed hermit named Momoyuki Mogura is banned from the afterlife. Now, he collects spirit-possessed will-o’-the-wisps in his lantern, hoping to make a comeback. Story and Art: Keigo Shinzou
The final winner of this year’s Shogakukan Manga Award is Keigo Shinzou’s slice-of-life series Hirayasumi. It began publishing in Shogakukan’s Big Comic Spirits magazine in 2021 and has nine compiled volumes so far. This beloved manga has an anime adaptation in the works. A live-action adaptation also came out in Fall 2025.

After developing an unlikely friendship with the grouchy old woman who lives in his neighborhood, Hiroto suddenly finds himself inheriting not just her house but some rather difficult emotions as well. His 18-year-old cousin, Natsumi, moves in with him, but as a struggling art student, she has her own troubles to deal with and may just put Hiroto’s easygoing lifestyle to the test.
Moreover, beloved veteran shōjo manga artist Moto Hagio (Nanohana, Otheroworld Barbara, A Cruel God Reigns) received the special Jury Award.
Until 2022, the Shogakukan Manga Award was divided into four categories: Kodomo (kids), Shounen (boys), Shoujo (girls), and General. However, the publisher removed these categories in the 69th iteration of the awards.
