After more than a decade of waiting, the Yona of the Dawn (Akatsuki no Yona) anime is finally coming back! The news was confirmed in the second 2026 issue of the Hana to Yume magazine, which also published the final chapter of Mizuho Kusanagi’s original manga.
Yona of the Dawn sequel anime details
The original 24-episode anime series of Yona of the Dawn came out back in 2014. Since then, there has been no news about the series actually returning other than some fan speculation. However, as Mizuho Kusanagi has published the final chapter of her manga, the anime also gets a sequel.
So far, no details about the anime’s staff, cast, and release date have been revealed. It has been confirmed that the series is already under production. The Hana to Yume magazine published the final chapter of the Yona of the Dawn manga on Friday, 18 December, 2025, and announced that the series will get an extra chapter, as well as a supplementary fanbook which will ship with the magazine’s sixth issue, coming out on 20 February, 2026.
The Yona of the Dawn manga by Mizuho Kusanagi began back in 2009. Viz Media publishes the manga in English and describes the story as:
A red-haired princess loses her family and her kingdom… Now she must rise and fight for her throne!
Princess Yona lives an ideal life as the only princess of her kingdom. Doted on by her father, the king, and protected by her faithful guard Hak, she cherishes the time spent with the man she loves, Su-won. But everything changes on her 16th birthday when tragedy strikes her family!
Yona reels from the shock of witnessing a loved one's murder and having to fight for her life. With Hak's help, she flees the palace and struggles to survive while evading her enemy's forces. But where will this displaced princess go when all the paths before her are uncertain?
