The anime is being adapted from Motoei Shinzawa’s classic gag manga series from the 1980s. The story of the anime focuses on the five members of the Kimen Gumi (Funny Face Club): Rei Ichido, Go Reietsu, Kiyoshi Shusse, Jin Daima, and Dai Monboshi. They all attend the Ichiou High School and have distinct and wildly eccentric personalities. The new transfer student Yui Kawa is intrigued by them and she and her friend Chie Uru start spending time with the group. Although the original manga and anime took place in the 80s, the new anime transfers the characters into the modern Reiwa era.
