The anime is based on Kamachi's light novel.
A few days ago, the anime adaptation of Kazuma Kamachi’s light novel “Toaru Anbu no ITEM” (A Certain Item of Dark Side) was announced. A recent update has revealed the main cast, staff, and other details of the series, along with a key visual of the main characters. Toaru Anbu no ITEM is the third installment in the A Certain series with the previous ones being A Certain Magical Index and A Certain Scientific Accelerator.

The main cast members of the anime are:
- Ami Koshimizu as Shizuri Mugino
- Aya Suzaki as Riko Takitsubo
- Maaya Uchida as Frenda Seivelun
- Chinatsu Akasaki as Saiai Kinuhata
Tatsuyuki Nagai directs the anime at J.C. Staff, with Shigeki Kimoto designing the characters. No other staff details have been confirmed so far.
The anime is based on the light novel series by Kazuma Kamachi and illustrated by Nilitsu. It’s a spin-off of Kamachi’s original light novel series A Certain Magical Index. Toaru Anbu no ITEM began publishing in March 2023 by ASCII Media Works under their Dengeki Bunko imprint. It also has a manga adaptation with illustrations by Strelka.
The story of the Toaru Anbu no ITEM spin-off series focuses on an elite group made up of four girls: Shizuri Mugino, Riko Takitsubo, Frenda Seivelun, and Saiai Kinuhata. Known as ITEM, they live in the underside of Academy City and undertake dangerous secret missions.
