Even Dave Grohl is impressed with the series’ soundtrack.
The Crunchyroll Showcase held at Anime Expo 2026 this week had a rather surprising reveal for fans of the beloved manga The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t a Guy at All: its upcoming adaptation is now slated for release in January 2027.
Additional details have also been announced for the project, including its cast, staff, and opening song. A video teaser for the anime has been released, which you can watch below:

The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t a Guy at All anime cast
The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t a Guy at All’s upcoming anime adaptation has locked in its core cast: Mariya Ise will voice Mitsuki Koga and Akari Kito who will voice Aya Osawa. The two characters are the focal point of the series’ romance, but supporting characters like Koga’s uncle Joe, or the duo’s classmate Narita, have not made their castings for the anime official just yet.
Interestingly, Mariya Ise and Akari Kito will be reprising the roles they played in the manga’s audio drama CD adaptation for this anime project.
The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t a Guy at All anime staff and Nirvana opening song
Animation studio CloverWorks is helming this anime adaptation. The staff includes Rino Yamasaki on series composition and Kanna Hirayama on character designs. Masafumi Ishiyama will serve as director.
The anime will also feature “Breed” by Nirvana as its opening theme song, which fits right in with the many rock-heavy musical artists who have been name-dropped in the manga, including Nirvana itself. Former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl also showed his support for the anime in a video interview with manga creator Sumiko Arai, released earlier today:
What is The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t a Guy at All about?
The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t a Guy at All is a manga series that originally began as a web series on X/Twitter back in 2022, created by author-artist Sumiko Arai. The manga is currently serialised by Pixiv Comic, and has been in print by Kadokawa Shoten since April 2023. Four volumes of the manga are available in Japan.
This is not the first adaptation of the manga, however, as a drama CD adaptation was also released in April 2024. Yen Press publishes an English version of the manga. Here is its description of the story:
“Fashionable and upbeat high schooler Aya loves listening to rock, but no one else seems to share her interest…until she meets a cool, stylish employee at a CD shop. Dressed in black from head to toe, he has this air of mystery about him, and his taste in music is impeccable. Aya falls hard for him—not knowing her crush is actually her female classmate Mitsuki! For her part, Mitsuki generally keeps to herself and avoids standing out at school. But given that she sits right next to Aya, Mitsuki’s all too aware of the other girl’s feelings, and she’s afraid to reveal the truth. So why does she find herself talking with Aya more and more…?”
