The “Chiikawa” anime, based on Nagano’s manga, is going on an extended hiatus till the end of this year. It’s set to return sometime in January 2027. In the meantime, 25 older episodes of the anime will be broadcast until 25 December, 2026. It has also been said that the older episodes which will be shown are the important ones, or the ones tied to the new Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island anime film.

Why is the Chiikawa anime going on a hiatus?
The official website of the Chiikawa anime has announced that new episodes will be on hiatus starting 2 October, 2026. 25 older episodes will be released instead. These episodes are being chosen based on their importance and their connection to the new Chiikawa movie. Older episodes will be broadcast until 25 December. New episodes will be broadcast again starting January 2027.
The Chiikawa anime, based on Nagano’s web manga series, began broadcasting in April 2022. The first season went on until March 2025. The second season began in July 2025. A film adaptation of the Siren Arc, titled Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island opened in Japan on 24 July, 2026. The movie recently JP¥15.84 billion (US$97.144 million) at the Japanese box office.
Child actress Haruka Aoki voices the titular Chiikawa in the anime, while child actor Makoto Tanaka voices Hachiware and Ari Ozawa voices Usagi.
Moreover, it has also been revealed that episodes of the Chiikawa anime will be released with an English-dub starting 1 October in the official English YouTube channel of Chiikawa.
