“The Camphorwood Custodian” anime movie reveals five new cast members ahead of 30 January premiere

Kenjiro Tsuda, Tomokazu Sugita, and more have joined the film’s cast.

The long-awaited anime movie”The Camphorwood Custodian” (Kusunoki no Bannin), based on Keigo Higashino’s novel, will premiere in Japanese theatres on 30 January, 2026. Five new voice cast members, including Kenjiro Tsuda and Tomokazu Sugita, have been revealed ahead of the release.

The Camphorwood Custodian new cast, staff, and other details

The five new cast members of the movie are:

  • Kenjiro Tsuda
  • Tomokazu Sugita
  • Taku Yashiro
  • Reina Ueda
  • Nobuo Tobita

Unfortunately, it has not been announced which characters they will be voicing in the film.

Previously announced cast members include:

  • Fumiya Takahashi as Reito Naoi
  • Yūki Amami as Chifune Yanagisawa
  • Asuka Saitō as Yumi Saji
  • Ryūbi Miyase as Sōki Ōba
  • Takao Ōsawa as Toshiaki Saji
  • Takehito Koyasu as Masakazu Yanagisawa
  • Miō Tanaka as Katsushige Yanagisawa
  • Akira Kamiya as Tōichirō Ōba

Moreover, the official accounts of the film have also announced that Japanese moviegoers who watch the film will receive a new and original text story by Higashino himself as a bonus gift. The text story is titled “The Camphorwood's Secret Power” (Kusunoki no Urawaza), and it follows Chifune’s cousin Masakazu in the past. The story will also reveal an unknown power of the Camphorwood Tree previously not stated in the original book or movie.

Tomohiko Ito directs the film at A-1 Pictures and Psyde Kick Studios, with Aniplex set as distributor. Taku Kishimoto writes the scripts while Blue Period manga creator Tsubasa Yamaguchi designs the characters with Akiko Itagaki. Veteran composer Yūgo Kanno is composing the music for the film. Based on Keigo Higashino’s novel, the story of the movie follows a man named Reito Naoi who is unfairly fired and then incarcerated after he tries to steal something from his former office in retaliation. In jail, Naito is approached by a lawyer, who promises to get him out of jail if he works for his client. It turns out that the client is Naito’s estranged aunt, who wants him to guard a massive camphor tree standing tall on the grounds of an ancient shrine. Soon, Naito realises that there are mysterious entities roaming around that tree.
