Kodansha is officially expanding into India, becoming the first Japanese publisher to establish local operations in the country.

Japanese publishing giant Kodansha has announced through its official X (formerly Twitter) account that it will launch a new joint venture, Kodansha India Pvt. Ltd., this July in partnership with Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. and IJ Kakehashi Services Pvt. Ltd.

As part of the expansion, Kodansha plans to begin releasing localised editions of some of its biggest manga titles in India, starting this autumn.

What manga will Kodansha release in India?

According to the announcement, localised editions of popular series, including Attack on Titan and BLUE LOCK, will be among the first titles released through Kodansha India.

The move will allow the publisher to distribute manga directly to readers in India through its local operations.

Why is this expansion significant?

The launch marks a major milestone for the manga industry, as Kodansha says it is the first Japanese publisher to establish local operations in India.

India has become an increasingly important market for anime and manga in recent years, with growing demand for officially licensed releases and localised content. A report by Anime Global White Paper 2026 confirms that India is ranked among the top countries for anime viewership in 2025 alone, making it obvious that the country is also gearing towards reading manga.

By establishing a local presence, Kodansha aims to bring its catalogue directly to Indian readers, and expand access to officially published manga in the region.
