Chainsmoker Cat director Taku Kimura will direct the new Atashin'chi NEXT episodes.
At the ABEMA Anime Matsuri 2026 event, Shin-Ei Animation announced two exciting projects! The first one is new episodes of the “Atashin'chi NEXT” anime. The second one is a new TV anime adaptation of “Oishinbo”, based on the long-running cooking manga series by Tetsu Kariya and Akira Hanasaki.
What are the new projects by Shin-Ei Animation?
The Atashin’chi NEXT anime was first released in October 2024. The upcoming new episodes which have been announced are the third installment in the anime. Chainsmoker Cat director Taku Kimura will direct the new episodes of Atashin’chi NEXT. A short announcement video of the anime has been released on the official Atashin’chi channel. The original Atashin’chi manga by Eiko Kera was serialised from 1994 to 2012 in the Sunday edition of the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper. A revival series titled Atashin'chi SUPER has been serialised in the Aera magazine since 2019. The comedy manga centres around the Tachibana family.
Shin-Ei Animation first released an anime adaptation of Atashin’chi in 2002, and it ended in 2009. A second series titled Shin Atashin'chi was broadcast from 2015 to 2016. The third and current series Atashin'chi Next has been releasing episodes since 2024.
The second anime project announced by Shin-Ei Animation is a new anime adaptation of Oishinbo, titled Shin Oishinbo (New Oishinbo). A short teaser has been released for this anime as well, which you can watch here. No other details about the new anime have been revealed yet.
The Oishinbo manga, written by Tetsu Kariya and drawn by Akira Hanasaki, began serialising in Shogakukan’s Big Comic Spirits magazine in 1983. In 2014, the manga went on an indefinite hiatus which it still hasn’t come back from yet.
Shin-Ei Animation released a 136-episode anime adaptation of Oishinbo from 1988 to 1992. It also received two television anime movies in 1992 and 1993.
The story of Oishinbo revolves around the foodie adventures of culinary journalist Shirō Yamaoka and his partner (turned wife later), Yūko Kurita.
