What do we know about Netflix’s THE ONE PIECE so far?

A new trailer has been revealed for the upcoming remake series. Netflix also streamed an English version of the teaser with English narration.

The first episode of the anime will be titled ‘Romance Dawn’, and the official X (formerly Twitter) account of the series revealed an artwork featuring the protagonist Monkey D. Luffy.

Mayumi Tanaka is coming back to voice Luffy in this series. No other cast members have been announced so far.

The comment from Mayumi Tanaka states (machine translated):

This is Mayumi Tanaka, the voice of Monkey D. Luffy. I'm so happy to be able to participate in the new THE ONE PIECE series once again as Luffy. I was a little nervous about starting something new at this age, but when I actually did it, I made some new discoveries and was able to play Luffy with a fresh perspective. I really enjoyed the voice recording process, so I hope lots of people will watch it. The streaming will start in February 2027, so please look forward to it!

Previously it was revealed that the first season of THE ONE PIECE will be 7 episodes long. Each episode will be about 42 minutes in length, and all of them will drop at once. The episodes will adapt the first 50 chapters of the manga, starting with the East Blue Saga, and in total will have about 300 minutes worth of content.

Masashi Koizuka is directing the anime at Wit Studio, with Hideaki Abe serving as the assistant director. Kyoji Asano and Takatoshi Honda are the character designers and chief animation directors. Taku Kishimoto is handling series composition. Other staff members include:

  • Prop Design: Eri Taguchi
  • Action Animator: Shuhei Fukuda, Ken Imaizumi
  • Art Director: Tomonori Kuroda
  • Creature Design / Concept Art: Yasuhiro Kajino

Netflix has described the series as:

Produced by WIT Studio, THE ONE PIECE is a brand new anime adaptation starting from the original manga’s East Blue saga. Separate from the TV anime series that has charged full speed ahead over the course of more than 25 years, this series taps into the expressive potential of modern technology to offer a familiar yet fresh take on the adventures of Luffy. The rare footage of character design sheets and image boards showcased in this video provides a glimpse into the world of this new anime.

What is ONE PIECE about?

THE ONE PIECE anime adapts Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece manga, which began serialisation in 1997 in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine. The original anime adaptation by Toei Animation began in 1999 and is still ongoing. Fans across the world are eagerly waiting for the encroaching series finale.

Viz Media publishes the manga in English and describes the story as:

As a child, Monkey D. Luffy was inspired to become a pirate by listening to the tales of the buccaneer "Red-Haired" Shanks. But his life changed when Luffy accidentally ate the Gum-Gum Devil Fruit and gained the power to stretch like rubber...at the cost of never being able to swim again! Years later, still vowing to become the king of the pirates, Luffy sets out on his adventure...one guy alone in a rowboat, in search of the legendary "One Piece," said to be the greatest treasure in the world…
