Netflix and MAPPA are teaming up to bring more anime to the world.

Netflix revealed in an official news release that the global streaming giant has teamed up with the leading Japanese anime studio, MAPPA, to work together on bringing exclusive anime titles to the platform, with a deal including story development, all the way to merchandise.

This move strengthens the two companies’ partnership, which began in 2020, and now shifts the focus towards catering to international audiences.

All-original MAPPA titles to stream exclusively on Netflix

Netflix confirms in its statement that the expanded partnership will bring multiple new anime projects to the platform, with many of these works already in planning and production.

The decision comes in part mainly due to Netflix’s viewership: in 2024, the company revealed that anime titles on the platform were viewed over one billion times. The company further stated that Japanese content, including anime, was the second most-viewed globally after English-language titles.

Regarding the partnership, President and CEO of Mappa, Manabu Otsuka commented that:

We have worked with Netflix on various projects in the past, but this expanded partnership is based on MAPPA’s core belief in being an independent studio–both creatively and in business. Japanese animation studios must proactively lead every stage, from understanding global audience needs and developing projects, to reaching viewers and expanding related businesses. MAPPA is committed to deepening our collaboration with Netflix, aiming for a long-term, win-win partnership.”

The Vice President of Content at Netflix Japan also stated:

MAPPA is a remarkable studio that has continuously taken on bold challenges and achieved unprecedented forms of expression. At Netflix, we also value the passion and dedication of creators. By combining MAPPA’s unique approach to anime production with Netflix’s global reach — and the courage to take risks, which is essential to creating compelling content–we hope to further expand the possibilities of anime. We are fully committed to delivering new works and excitement to fans around the world.

A variety of MAPPA-produced titles are already streaming on Netflix, including: Attack on Titan THE FINAL, Jujutsu Kaisen, Kakegurui Twin, Ranma ½, and many more. With this partnership in full swing, we can expect to see even more titles in the future, although we’d have to wait a bit more for the details, as Netflix or MAPPA are yet to confirm the exact nature of these upcoming projejcts.
