My Hero Academia: Vigilantes, also known in Japan as ヴィジランテ -僕のヒーローアカデミア ILLEGALS (Boku No Hero Academia ILLEGALS), is based on a manga spin-off written by Hideyuki Furuhashi and illustrated by Betten Court. The manga acts as a prequel to Kohei Horikoshi’s superhero shounen manga My Hero Academia, and is set five years before the story of Izuku Midoriya.
The first season was directed by Kenichi Suzuki at Bones Film, with Yosuke Kuroda writing the scripts and Takahiko Yoshida in charge of character design. The music was composed by Yuki Hayashi, Shogo Yamashiro, and Yuki Furuhashi.
The official website for the series describes the story as:
The story takes place in a superhuman society where about 80% of the world's population has supernatural abilities.
In a world filled with chaos, there are "chosen" professions, "heroes", who protect people from accidents, disasters, and those who misuse their "quirks". On the other hand, there are people who cannot help but save those in front of them , even if they are not "chosen" . This is the story of such a hero, "Vigilante".
Haimawari Koichi is a dull college student who has given up on his dream of becoming a hero.
His secret pleasure is wandering around the city in an All Might cosplay, pretending to be a professional hero and helping people.
Koichi lives an ordinary life, but he meets the self-proclaimed idol group Pop☆Step, who perform unauthorized guerrilla live shows, and the mysterious masked man Knuckleduster, who calls himself a "cleaner specializing in trash," and gets caught up in the activities of the "Vigilantes."
Are these people who can save people illegally criminals who disrupt order, or vigilantes of justice?
