The manga is a sequel of the original classic shōjo series Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch, which was serialised from 2002 to 2005 in Kodansha’s Nakayoshi magazine. The first season of the manga’s anime adaptation aired from 2003 to 2004 with 52 episodes. The second season, titled Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch Pure aired from April to December 2004 with 39 episodes. Due to the popularity of the original manga and anime, Pink Hanamori created the sequel series Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch: Aqua in 2021.
