“Cherry and Virgin” film details
The film follows Ryō, a 32-year-old erotic manga artist who struggles around women, and Ami, a 28-year-old fujoshi disillusioned with men and her own creative ambitions. The two meet by chance, with the story exploring their developing relationship.
The cast includes:
- Takashi Ōkado as Ryō
- Yaeko Kiyose as Ami
Toei Video is producing and distributing the film, marking Masanao Kawajiri’s first feature-length and commercial work.
Kawajiri previously directed the hybrid short Aru Nihon no Egaki Shōnen (“A Japanese Boy Who Draws”), which combined animation with live-action and manga panels. The short won an Excellence Award at the 23rd Japan Media Arts Festival Awards in 2020.
The film was also funded through a 2021 campaign on Motion Gallery, which raised JPY2,740,730 (approximately US$17,200) out of its JPY3 million goal. The money accrued through the fundraiser is intended to fund local screening events, appearances at international movie festivals, as well as rewards for supporters.
