What is “Credits Roll Into the Sea” about?

“Credits Roll Into the Sea” was serialised in Akita Shoten's Mystery Bonita magazine from October 2020 to November 2025. Dark Horse licensed the series for an English release in 2025.

The story follows a 65-year-old widow named Umiko Chino, who, in the wake of her husband's passing, realises that she has no noteworthy hobbies to speak of.

One day, after her VCR breaks, Umiko decides to go to the cinema to relive the memory of her and her deceased husband's first date. However, Umiko finds herself more entranced with the reactions of the audience than the movie, and on one mysterious individual in particular. The individual is a young film major named Kai Hamauchi, who in a peculiar turn of events asks her to make a film with him–changing the course of her life.

The manga has earned many distinctions during its publication, thanks to its emotive story. In the 2022 edition of Kono Mang ga Sugoi!, the title ranked first in the list of best manga for female readers. In 2023, it dropped down to sixth place. It also received nominations for the 10th Manga Taisho in 2022, and in the 27th and 29th edition of the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2023 and 2025 respectively.

Who are the staff members of “Credits Roll Into the Sea”?

The announcement trailer unveiled that Taichi Ishidate is directing the film at Kyoto Animation. Ishidate is most known for being the director for Kyoukai no Kanata (2013), as well as being the director for Violet Evergarden and its subsequent movie. Besides directing, Ishidate also worked as a storyboard artist, key animator, and episode director for a number of Kyoto Animation titles.

Shochiku is credited for the distribution of the film. Other staff members are yet to be revealed.
