Humans bloom into plants in this upcoming anime adaptation of Fool Night.

Netflix has announced that Kasumi Yasuda's acclaimed sci-fi manga Fool Night is getting an anime adaptation, with the series set to stream worldwide exclusively on Netflix in 2026.

The announcement was made during Netflix's Anime Studio Focus panel at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, alongside the reveal of a teaser visual, teaser trailer, and the anime's main cast. Animation studios Sunrise and SHAFT will collaborate with production.

Who are the cast members of Fool Night?

The main cast includes:

  • Kouki Uchiyama as Toshiro Kamiya

Regarding his role as Kamiya, Uchiyama comments (machine translation):

Fool Night is a work that depicts people living on a future Earth that has become a harsh environment. One of those people, Toshiro Kamiya, wishes for a certain thing amidst his financial struggles. In order to express the complex changes in his emotions, I challenged myself with various types of expressions in every single episode. I truly hope many people will watch the Fool Night anime.

  • Minako Kotobuki as Yomiko Hourai

Regarding her role as Hourai, this is what Kotobuki states (machine translation):

I am Minako Kotobuki, and I will be voicing Yomiko Horai.

Ever since the auditions, I was deeply drawn to the intense world-building of Fool Night drawn by Yasuda-sensei and the incredible sense of Director Seshita. I felt so strongly about it that I thought if I could play Yomiko in this project, I would have no regrets. It is an absolute honor to be playing her now.

Yomiko loves to eat and seems like an ordinary person at first glance, but as someone working as a 'Plantation Official' (Tenka Shokuin), there is perhaps something distorted about her form somewhere. The happiness we feel is bound to be different from the happiness Yomiko and the others feel, which is precisely why I played her with great care so as not to miss a single nuance.

This is a story that could very well happen in our not-so-distant future. I am truly delighted that this story will be streamed worldwide on Netflix.

Who is working on the Fool Night anime?

The anime is being co-produced by Sunrise and Shaft. This will be the first time that these two studios will be collaborating on an anime project.

The staff includes:

  • Director: Atsuyuki Yukawa
  • Assistant Director: Ryo Shimura
  • Series Composition: Jin Tanaka

What is Fool Night about?

Kasumi Yasuda began serialising Fool Night in Big Comic Superior in November 2020. The manga has earned widespread critical acclaim, placing 12th in Kono Manga ga Sugoi! 2023 and appearing in MyAnimeList's You Should Read This Manga selections in both 2023 and 2024.

The series is licensed in English by VIZ Media, and describes the story as:

The earth of the distant future is covered in thick clouds, and the sun no longer shines. Plants wither, and oxygen is thin. To fight extinction, humankind has developed a technology that turns humans into plants, providing a small amount of oxygen. Is this process sustainable? Is it ethical? Toshiro Kamiya must consider these questions as he's faced with a difficult choice—save his family or save himself. Kamiya is at the end of his rope. His mother is ill, and his job barely pays for her medication, much less food. With few options left, he considers the life-changing process of floromorphosis. Ready to give his body up for a payday, Kamiya is about to explore the limits of society's waning humanity.
