Hugo begins telling Isagi about a different type of ego.
After Karasu’s assist and Hiori’s goal in the previous chapter of Blue Lock manga, the team starts to celebrate catching up to France. However, for the egoist Isagi, Karasu’s sudden change in attitude isn’t very welcome. He confronts Karasu about letting go of his striker’s ego to become the second best. The two get into a verbal tiff that gets interrupted by Oliver. As the match begins again, Hugo gets ready to tell Isagi how being the second best is another type of egoistic playing.

Blue Lock Chapter 337 recap

The chapter starts with everyone celebrating Japan’s goal while Isagi wonders what direction this Blue Lock is heading towards. He wonders what he should believe in and looks at Jinpachi Ego. However, Karasu calls him and says they should keep using this method. Since France is covering Isagi heavily, the moves they practiced won’t work. Karasu plans to help set up shots for others just like he did for Hiori. He will figure out new ways to score goals without Isagi as that’s the only way to beat France.
Isagi asks him if he’s ready to throw away his life as a striker for this. Karasu says that he isn’t throwing it away. Even Isagi has done things like temporarily assisting to help the team win. If they are talking about strikers, then Gagamaru as the goalie and the guys playing defender also aren’t living up to their striker’s ego. Although Isagi agrees with this, he can’t shake the feeling that something is wrong with Karasu’s new attitude.

This makes Karasu angry and he points out that unlike Isagi, at least he’s trying to change for the betterment of Blue Lock. Isagi then points out that what's bugging him is Karasu doing this for Blue Lock, as doing anything besides playing for yourself is not the way of the egoist. He says that all of them are trying to become the world’s best striker, and Karasu deviated from that philosophy because of what Hugo said. Now he’s prioritising the team’s victory as the ‘second best’. But that’s not the Blue Lock way.
Karasu gets angry and tells Isagi to score a goal. He points out that since Isagi isn’t effective anymore, he’s trying to change based on their opponent’s opinion. Would it be better if they lost to France just for the sake of Isagi? Karasu says that it looks to him that Isagi is the one spinning his wheels about being the number one and ruining Blue Lock. This offends Isagi and he yells at Karasu saying he is also thinking about Blue Lock. He is working hard wracking his brain about what he should do as the best in Blue Lock. Karasu points out that even Isagi said that he’s doing it for Blue Lock, so how is he any different from him?

The captain Oliver Aiku then interrupts the two and says both of them are right in a way. Since Karasu’s new method brought results, and the egotistic mentality is important two, he suggests they use both to score goals. Karasu says that it’s fine by him, but it looks like it’s time for Blue Lock to change. The French players are excited now that Blue Lock is fighting back. Hugo promises to keep leading this field toward its destiny. The match begins, and Rin faces Loki head on. Both of the strikers are hungry for a goal.

Although they have settled on a strategy for now, Isagi feels uncomfortable because they haven’t stopped the fundamental issue. They won’t be able to replicate the goal Karasu and Hiori made as France is ready for it now. Nothing will change if he can’t make himself effective, but Isagi refuses to live as second best. Just as he thinks that, Hugo comes up behind Isagi and tells him that second best is just another type of ego, and being the best isn’t the only way to live. Isagi is surprised and suddenly turns away from Hugo. The French player says that he will tell Isagi about his ego as the second best.
Blue Lock Chapter 337 recap

Is it time for Blue Lock to change? I couldn’t tell you. But it certainly does make the story more interesting. Although Hugo is an interesting character, his incessant talk about being the second best and him obsessing over Isagi’s true fate is really irritating. I understand why Isagi is annoyed with him for creeping up his back at any given moment. However, his words did change Karasu’s mind and he even helped score a goal? So will other players including Isagi be swayed by Hugo and his ego?
