The service originally launched in 2013.
After 13 years, the free manga/webtoon reading service Comico is going to shut down in January 2027. The platform is a part of NHN Japan Corporation and originally launched in 2013.
Why is the Comico manga platform shutting down?
The popular free webtoon/manga platform was launched by NHN Japan Corporation in 2013. In a recent announcement, Comico stated (machine translation):
We regret to inform you that, due to circumstances beyond our control, Comico will cease service provision as of 23:59 on Wednesday, 6 January, 2027.
Comico will suspend the addition of new content, new account registrations, coin sales, and rental renewals on 31 August, 2026. Users won’t be able to post any work to the platform after that date either.
Sales and rentals will also cease completely on 28 September.
Next year, from 7 January to 30 April, users will be able to transfer their collections to another designated platform and also get a refund for their unused coin purchases. However, due to pending permissions from publishers, some of the titles won’t be transferred to this new site.
NHN Global’s Pocket Comics webtoon platform shut its English and French platforms down already. The Korean Comico platform also ended its service in October 2025. The English version of the Pocket Comics app was launched in the United States, Canada, and Singapore in July 2020.
NHN Japan Corporation launched the free manga reading smartphone app Comico in 2013, and also launched different versions of it for Taiwan, South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam.
