Hugo tells Isagi to become the world’s second best.

Japan’s struggle against France continues as the goal attempt by Rin was completely foiled by Loki and Hugo in the recent manga chapter. It finally dawns on Isagi that there might not be a way for Blue Lock to beat France at all. Hugo takes advantage of the moment and tells Isagi that they will never be able to surpass France if Isagi continues to focus on being number one when his rightful position is the second place where he can help his team along.

Blue Lock Chapter 333 recap

Rin vs. Loki (Image: Kodansha/ Muneyuki Kaneshiro/ Yusuke Nomura).

The chapter begins with Rin running past Loki with the ball in a swift move. However, the Wunderkind catches up to the genius thanks to his incredible speed. Rin still takes a perfect shot at the goal, but Hugo is suddenly there to kick the ball away. The block upsets Japanese fans, and Isagi realises that they predicted Rin’s shot too. Every Blue Lock player’s individual quirks, the team’s tactics and way of thinking has been logically analysed by France.

With every player in the right place and performing at 100%, the team is as perfect as can be. Isagi finally starts to lose faith and wonders if it’s possible for Blue Lock to beat France at all. Hugo comments that Blue Lock is a good team that was able to blend the clever and diligent group dynamics of Japanese football with the individualistic philosophy of everyone wanting to become the best. Their coach is an exceptional man for successfully mixing the best of both worlds.

However, the team’s effectiveness will end here. For winning, a team needs 66% talent, 33% environment, and 1% luck. Unfortunately, Blue Lock has been scraping by with the 1% luck that Isagi pulls. One only needs to stop that luck from occurring to stop Japan. When Isagi responds irritatedly, Hugo points out that his words must have hit the mark. He says that since Blue Lock’s progress relies so heavily on Isagi’s boundless imagination, Isagi is not allowed to ever stop thinking and evolving. If he ever stops growing, the team will collapse.

Unfortunately, the pressure is finally getting to Isagi, and making his movements more predictable and easier to stop. The fact that he feels this pressure proves that Isagi is not suitable to be number one, because if he truly was suitable for that position, he would be completely overjoyed right now. Loki, however, is the perfect fit for number one as not only was he born with the best physical capabilities, but also lacks any doubt that he can become the world’s best striker.

Hugo plans to help him along to reach places he couldn’t go on his own, and become the second-best. He tells Isagi that being the second-best doesn’t mean he has the second place, but has the bird’s eye view of the whole team from the second highest spot. It means understanding the number one the most and becoming their equal while having more control over the team.

He invites Isagi to follow his destiny of being the second place and help Blue Lock get stronger. However, if he continues to strive to become the world’s best striker, Blue Lock will be annihilated in this match. In the final panel, we see Bachira getting ready to take a corner kick.

The moment Isagi began to feel the pressure of his team's heavy dependence on his ability, we knew an unscalable obstacle was coming. Now that Blue Lock is being utterly defeated by France's gameplay, it’s time for Isagi to break the wall in front of him. Will he do it the way Hugo instructs him to, or continue down his path of becoming the world’s best striker? If he does choose to follow Hugo’s advice, we might see a new dynamic emerge between Isagi, Rin, and the rest of the Japanese team.
