Japan’s goal plan is foiled by the French team.

In the last chapter of the Blue Lock manga, the French team scored its first goal against Japan. In the new chapter, we see Japan trying to attack France with one of their prearranged plans. However, the brainiac Hugo sees right through it and stops Isagi before he can take any action.

Warning: Spoilers ahead!

Blue Lock Chapter 331 recap

Reo raises morale after France's goal (Image: Kodansha/ Muneyuki Kaneshiro/ Yusuke Nomura).

The chapter opens with the French team and France supporters celebrating the first goal of the match. With the score now 0-1 in France’s favour, the Blue Lock players start commenting on how talented the opponents are. Niko comments that the play was not in their data. Tabito answers that even though the goal can be explained logically, it took immense skill and talent of all the players involved. It made them understand the level of the French team, who are this U-20 World Cup’s favourite to win and the defending champions.

Reo tells his teammates to not lose their cool over an experimental surprise attack. Everyone thanks him for the boost, and Isagi comments that Japan also has their plan in case they’re behind by a point. Everyone decides to focus on their game and the match begins again. This time, Japan goes on the offensive as Rin and Isagi run up the middle. However, Charles stops him and says he already knows how to stop this dual attack. As another French player tries to box Rin in, he passes the ball and says they already have a workaround for this situation.

The ball ends up in front of Chigiri, whose amazing speed helps him kick it out before the French player can touch it. He passes the ball to Reo with a direct cross. Reo jumps up to receive the pass while three French players close in on him. But instead of shooting into the goal like the opponents expected, Reo copies one of Kunigami’s moves and sets up a shot in front of Isagi, who is already close to the goalpost. But before Isagi can even touch the ball, Hugo is there to stop him.

The French player comments that Blue Lock has a good team. However, Isagi’s tro gun move only works when the enemy is in front of him and he can feint in either direction to make his play unpredictable. However, if the opponent charges up from the side like Hugo, his movements are nullified. He says that Isagi’s weapon can be crushed by logic. Isagi is surprised to realise that Hugo has already run a simulation using his movements as data, much like what Isagi does with his opponents. Hugo guesses what he’s thinking and says that the backwards volley move Isagi used against Nigeria can also be nullified through contact.

Both Karasu and Rin then run up to Isagi and ask him to pass. But French players block both of the helpers, making it so that Isagi can’t pass to them either. Hugo says that if they crush Isagi, Blue Lock will be dead in the water. But Isagi turns around with a smirk and says that he has devoured enough arrogant players to come this far, and he will risk it all to be number one. But Hugo looks at him calmly and says that he is more suited to become number two. Dumbfounded, Isagi stares at him while Hugo steals the ball. The French player then asks the protagonist if he believes in Destiny.

Blue Lock Chapter 331 review

Hugo bixes Isagi in (Image: Kodansha/ Muneyuki Kaneshiro/ Yusuke Nomura).

After the Neo Egoist League, it’s fun to see Blue Lock facing off against the World Eleven in the most serious stage. Hugo proves in this chapter that he is as much a logical monster as Isagi if not more. It’s the first time that the Blue Lock team has run into an opponent who is almost impossible to read. With their talent and co-ordination, it seems that the French team is still above Blue Lock. However, with how fast the players in Blue Lock evolve, it might not be long before they catch up. I’m interested to see if Japan is able to score a single goal in this match against France.
