Isagi realises that Hugo might be ahead of him in his own game.

In the previous chapter of the Blue Lock manga, we saw Isagi and Karasu get into a fight as the latter deviated from Blue Lock’s philosophy to score a goal. In the latest chapter, Hugo tells Isagi why he is so hell-bent on telling people to walk their destined path and do the things they were made for. However, being second best doesn’t mean he doesn’t have his own grandiose ego.

Blue Lock Chapter 338 recap

Hugo begins telling Isagi about his true nature (Image: Kodansha/ Muneyuki Kaneshiro/ Yusuke Nomura).

Hugo begins telling Isagi about his ego as the second best. Loki passes him the ball, and as he starts running with it, he says that Isagi probably thinks being second best means someone who couldn’t manage to become the best. But that’s not it. The Blue Lock players have just been brainwashed by Jinpachi Ego to believe they have to be the best. Isagi tells him to shut up because he doesn’t want to hear his biased opinions. But Hugo says that Isagi is the one who’s biased and asks if he ever looked at someone and thought they were wasting their talents. Suddenly, Isagi is reminded of Hiori, Barou, and Kenyu, who he thought were not living up to their potential.

Hugo says that ever since he was young, he was able to sense when people were wasting their talents deviating from their natural fate. It drove him crazy when people who were ignorant of themselves yearned to do things they couldn’t and reach for things they can’t have. When he sees people failing because their talent and self-image don’t align, it makes him want to correct their mechanisms. That’s why he is always telling people to do things that he thinks will help them improve. Isagi calls him a self-centered meddling jerk, and Hugo answers that since he’s doing what he wants, he doesn’t care if others hate him for it.

Isagi wonders if he and Hugo are similar (Image: Kodansha/ Muneyuki Kaneshiro/ Yusuke Nomura).

But when one of his ideas causes someone to live more suitably to their talents, the world begins to turn anew. He changes people’s destinies and producing people like that is fascinating for him. Hearing this, Isagi remembers Onazi and thinks whether Hugo and himself are more alike than he thinks. Hugo tells Isagi that he wants to learn why he was born, and in a swift move, breaks away from him with the ball. Oliver yells at the players to watch for a pass. Hugo says that since his talents lie in changing others, he never wanted to be a striker. Instead, he wishes to win the world cup as the second best and a midfielder.

The record of winning the football World Cup most times belongs to the Brazilian legend Pelé, who won it three times. As Hugo mentions this, we see Loki and Charles coming in from the sides, and Blue Lock players rush to them to stop any passes. But Hugo is not looking to pass. He tells Isagi that he will break Pelé’s record and win the World Cup four times, becoming one of humanity’s legends. In a swift shot, he cuts through the field and scores a beautiful goal. Japan’s players realise that he created all the pass courses as mere decoys so he can get a straight shot.

Seeing Hugo score a goal, Isagi realises that his dream is huge. It’s not about being the best or the second best, Hugo’s dream is much more grandiose than even Isagi’s. He is also sharper than Isagi. And even Hugo’s ego is greater than his. As Isagi comes to this realisation, Hugo asks him if he still hates the idea of being the second best in one of the coolest manga panels of recent times. At the end of the first half of the match, France is now ahead by one goal again, making the score 2-1 in their favour. In the final part of the chapter, we see Jinpachi Ego getting ready to dispatch his Double Jokers Barou and Shidou onto the field.

Blue Lock Chapter 338 review

Isagi realises that Hugo's Ego is greater than his (Image: Kodansha/ Muneyuki Kaneshiro/ Yusuke Nomura).

Hugo scoring a goal finally showed Isagi what being the “second best” is all about. It’s not about only helping the strikers score because you can’t, but about manipulating people to bring out the best in them so they can live up to their full potential and help you reach your dream. The convoluted nature of his psyche makes Hugo a really interesting and important character. I would love to see what he does when he faces Barou and Shidou, two of  the most unpredictable and egotistical players in Blue Lock. But it would be interesting to see who Jinpachi Ego replaces to put them in the field.
