The Nemuki+ magazine’s official X (formerly Twitter) account announced on 12 February that Ichiko Ima’s supernatural manga series “Hyakki Yakoushou” (Beyond Twilight) is getting an anime adaptation. The series will premiere sometime in April 2026.

Hyakki Yakoushou anime adaptation details

Other than the April premiere window, nothing more about the anime’s cast or staff details have been shared as of now. As per a report from Comic Natalie, the anime will actually be a series of shorts which will be streamed online.

The anime is based on Ichiko Ima’s manga, which began serialisation in the Asahi Shimbun Publication’s Nemuki magazine in 1995. The manga was later moved to the Nemuki+ when the previous magazine stopped publication in 2012. The 31st volume of the manga came out in April 2024, with the 32nd scheduled to be published on 7 April, 2026.

The first volume of the manga was published in English by Aurora Publishing Inc. in 2010. But it was shut down just after one volume. Amazon’s listing of the English volume describes the story as:

Since birth, Ritsu has inherited the ability to see spirits and demons from his novelist grandfather, a sort of sixth sense. However, when his grandfather passes away, he loses the protection he had when under his care and ends up forming a contract with a demon named Blue Storm.

The manga was a recommended title at the 2005 Japanese Media Arts Festival. It won an Excellence Award at the same festival in 2006. It was also one of the finalists for the 9th Tezuka Cultural Award in 2005. The manga inspired two stage plays in 2003 and 2006. A live-action tv series adaptation was also released in 2007.
