A brand new anime feature film is coming to the Space Battleship Yamato franchise soon! Titled “Cosmoship Yamato √2199”, the movie is being co-directed by Hideaki Anno (creator of the Evangelion series) and Yutaka Izubuchi. A new teaser visual has been launched for the film.

What do we know about the “Cosmoship Yamato √2199” anime movie so far?
Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno is co-directing the upcoming movie with Yutaka Izubuchi, who has previously worked on the Evangelion, Mobile Suit Gundam, and Space Battleship Yamato projects.
Anno is also planning the movie as the production executive producer alongside Production I.G. founder Mitsuhisa Ishikawa. He is also working on the design works with Izubuchi. Shin Office Academy is presenting the project.
At the 50th anniversary of the Space Battleship Yamato franchise in 2024, Anno announced that he and his studio Khara will create a new Yamato project soon. He became part of Production I.G's board of directors on 21 August, 2025.
Further details about the new anime movie, such as its release date and cast will be revealed at a later date.
The original Space Battleship Yamato anime series was created by Yoshinobu Nishizaki in 1974.
