The anime is based on the popular manga written by Kenji Inoue and illustrated by Kimitake Yoshioka. It began serialising in Kodansha’s Good! Afternoon magazine since 2014. The first season of the Grand Blue Dreaming anime premiered in 2018. After seven years of waiting, the series came back with its second season in 2025.
