The first season aired in 2015.
The fantasy anime series GATE is returning after 12 years with Season 2 in 2027. The news was confirmed by its official social media accounts and website, and includes a promotional video and staff updates.
The second season will be titled “GATE 2: Tides of Conflict”.
“GATE 2: Tides of Conflict” details
Season 2 will adapt the sequel light novel series to the original “GATE” novels written by Takumi Yanai and illustrated by Daisuke Izuka. Season 2 will follow a new set of characters from the Maritime Self-Defense Force.
The series itself follows quite an interesting premise: a mysterious gate opens within modern-day Ginza, Tokyo, and from it, various medieval soldiers and fantastical monsters emerge to attack the city. In a bid to repel these enemies, the Japanese Self-Defense Forces go on the offensive, passing through the gate to establish a forward operating base, as well as to attempt negotiations with the empire of this other world.
However, after this was achieved, Japan now has to face the envy of other nations who wish to exploit the resources of the world beyond the gate.
Season 2 on the other hand, pivots its focus from on-ground military personnel to its naval units, all the while continuing the political drama established by Japan's monopoly of the gate.
The adaptation of the light novel's second season was initially confirmed in July 2025. This time, Studio M2 takes over as production studio from A-1 Pictures, and will be directed by Toru Takahashi. Tatsuhiko Urata, who wrote the series for Season 1, is returning to reprise his role. Shigeru Fujita is designing the characters.
Crunchyroll is streaming the first season of GATE, and describes the story as:
On August 20XX, a gate suddenly appears in Tokyo's Ginza district, unleashing a portal where monsters, medieval knights and other fantasy beings come from another world and wreak havoc on Tokyo. The Japanese Defense Force take action against these monsters and push them back into the "Gate". Third Reconnaissance Team is dispatched to the "Special Region" lead by officer (and otaku) Youji Itami. On their travels, they are joined by a beautiful elf girl who is a survivor from the dragon's rampage and guide the group across the dangerous new world.
