A new movie has been announced for San-X’s “Sumikko Gurashi” franchise in celebration of its 15th anniversary. This is the fifth anime film in the franchise, and set to premiere sometime in 2027. The news was announced with a visual by creator Yuri Yokomizo, which hints at Neko being the film’s central character.

What do we know about the upcoming Sumikko Gurashi movie?
The title of the movie hasn’t been disclosed yet, but it’s set to premiere in Japan sometime next year.
The characters in the Sumikko Gurashi franchise include:
- Shirokuma: A polar bear who hates being cold
- Penguin?: A penguin who is not sure if it’s actually a penguin
- Tonkatsu: A piece of pork cutlet that was left uneaten
- Neko: A shy and quiet cat
- Tokage: A dinosaur that portrays itself as a lizard
Other minor characters of the franchise include a polka dot furoshiki cloth named Furoshiki, a weed with a positive attitude named Zasshou, and a cluster of multicoloured tapioca pearls named Tapioca.
The characters in Sumikko Gurashi are all slightly negative and introverted characters who prefer staying in the corner of a room.
The franchise is owned by the company San-X, while the characters were created by Yuri Yokomizo in 2012.
The first anime movie in the franchise, titled Sumikkogurashi – Good to be in the corner, was released in November 2019. The second film, titled Eiga Sumikko Gurashi: Aoi Tsukiyo no Mahō no Ko opened in November 2021. The third movie, titled Eiga Sumikko Gurashi: Tsugihagi Kōjō no Fushigi na Ko, followed in November 2023. The fourth and most recent movie,Eiga Sumikko Gurashi: Sora no Ōkoku to Futari no Ko, came out in October 2025.
In October 2023, the franchise also released an anime series.
