The groom-to-be leaped off a building donning Attack on Titan's iconic ODM gear.
A Hong Kong man went viral on the internet for proposing to his girlfriend with all the style of a Survey Corps member from Attack on Titan, in a video which featured him gliding down a building while equipped with the anime's signature ODM (Omni-Directional Mobilitiy) gear. The proposal also featured companions dressed in the Corps' official military capes, complete with Mikasa Ackerman's red scarf, and a looming to-scale Attack Titan statue.
A larger-than-life proposal
It's not everyday an anime fan can pop the big question to their beloved with their favourite anime front-and-centre. According to a report by SHOUT Singapore, the proposal by Derek Cheung towards his girlfriend, Angel Chong, cost seven figures in Hong Kong dollars, and included an orchestra that performed a number of Attack on Titan theme songs, like Guren no Yumiya (Crimson Bow and Arrow), and Jiyuu no Tsubasa (Wings of Freedom) by Japanese band Linked Horizon.
Cheung, equipped with a harness and the ODM gear, glided down a building towards his partner, all the while showcasing some flashy moves with both Titan-slaying blades in each hand. Chong, who was waiting in front of a massive statue of Eren's Attack Titan form, watched in anticipation with a big smile on her face. After safely landing, a person off-screen handed Cheung Mikasa's signature red scarf, and in a homage to Eren and Mikasa, placed it around Chong's neck before going down on one knee and popping the big question.
The proposal, which the couple had been planning since November 2025, was held in Cheung's home.
According to Cheung, one of the reasons why he decided to go through with the Attack on Titan-themed proposal was to help Eren and Mikasa “complete this story”. On a separate Instagram post, he states that, like a lot of fans of the show who are unsatisfied with Eren and Mikasa's tragic ending, he was “a little mad” that Isayama Hajime, the creator of Attack on Titan, can get married without any trouble. Through this proposal, and their future married life, the couple hopes that their union can be a hopeful look into what could have happened if Mikasa and Eren ended up together.
To his fiancée, Cheung promises in Cantonese, English, and Japanese: “I vow to love you, to protect you, and to take care of you forever and ever.”
Our best wishes to the happy couple!
