Masanori Morita is the story creator for the upcoming series.

Masanori Morita’s famous boxing-themed delinquent manga series Rokudenashi Blues is coming back with a brand new manga. It was revealed by the X (formerly Twitter) account of Shueisha’s Grand Jump magazine that popular illustrator Boichi will be illustrating the new series, which will launch sometime this Summer. The new manga is titled Rokudenashi Blues Gaiden: Onikazura.

Morita posted on his own X account stating that the upcoming series is not technically a sequel of his 1988 original manga. Instead, it will depict the fight that took place between Onizuka and Kasai, which was mentioned in the manga but never depicted. As Onizuka and Kasai are two of the Four Heavenly Kings in the Rokudenashi Blues series, the action in the new manga will be intense.

Boichi, the illustrator, has already released a visual depicting the two heavenly kings and it looks phenomenal! Boichi’s previous manga works include Dr. Stone (art), Sun-ken Rock (story and art), Origin (story and art), and many more. His most recent work is The Marshal King, which began serialisation in Shueisha’s Shonen Jump+ digital service in February 2025.

The original Rokudenashi Blues manga was published in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump manga from May 1988 to February 1997 and has been collected into 42 tankōbon volumes. It received an anime movie adaptation in 1992, with another following in 1993. Two live-action movie adaptations also followed in 1996 and 1998. A live-action TV series adaptation aired in 2011.

The story of the manga follows Taison Maeda, a high school delinquent whose dream is to become the best boxer in the world. However, Maeda and his friends come across many obstacles while chasing their dreams. The story is not just about fighting, but also honour, friendship, mixed in with a healthy dose of comedy.
