The D23 showcase panel last Friday confirmed that Sora is finally getting his own series.
With hype surrounding the long-awaited fourth installment of the beloved video game franchise Kingdom Hearts in full swing, Disney's D23 fan event has revealed that there is even more in store for fans: an original anime series is now in the works!
The Kingdom Hearts anime series will air on Disney Channel and stream on Disney+, while Kingdom Hearts IV is set to be released sometime in 2027.
What is the Kingdom Hearts anime about?
According to Disney's announcement, the Kingdom Hearts anime will feature an original story. However, it will be inspired by the events of the game franchise; so this anime series will likely not be a direct adaptation of the franchise's complicated timeline.
The anime is further said to be developed in partnership with the franchise creative head Tetsuya Nomura and Square Enix, although it's unconfirmed which animation studio will take on the mantle. Square Enix has collaborated with different studios for its other game-to-anime adaptations, notably with NieR Automata's Ver1.1a anime, which was helmed by A-1 Pictures, and Last Order: Final Fantasy VII, which was animated by Madhouse. We can expect more details as production of the anime is well underway.
A release date is also yet to be announced.
When is Kingdom Hearts IV coming out?
Kingdom Hearts IV is set to launch sometime in late 2027, a whopping eight years after the launch of Kingdom Hearts III. The upcoming game will include a crossover with Pixar’s animated movie Coco.
