You read that right, Chiikawa is getting a movie! The official X (formerly Twitter) account of Chiikawa unveiled a new teaser poster for the movie adaptation, titled “Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island” (Eiga Chiikawa: Ningyo no Shima no Himitsu), which is set to release in Japanese theatres sometime in Summer 2026. Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island details
Unfortunately, not much has been revealed regarding Chiikawa’s upcoming feature film. It is, however, being directed by Kei Oikawa at CygamesPictures, the same studio that animates the hit Fall 2025 title “Umamusume: Cinderella Gray”.
The movie is adapting the Siren Arc of the original manga by Nagano, which is the longest story arc in the franchise, where Chiikawa and friends travel to an island for rewards and “free food” in exchange for simple tasks.
The teaser visual shows Chiikawa, Hachiware, and Usagi under the moon and setting sail on their adventure.
The voice actors from the 2022 anime adaptation are set to reprise their roles, they are:
- Haruka Aoki as Chiikawa
- Makoto Tanaka as Hachiware
- Ari Ozawa as Usagi
The Chiikawa manga, also known by the title Nanka Chiikawa Chiisakute Kawaii Yatsu (Something Small and Cute) is a web series written and illustrated by Nagano, and began as a series of panels posted on the author’s X account back in 2020. It would later be collected into tankobon volumes by Kodansha, with eight volumes as of November 2025. The manga is yet to be licensed for an English release.
The anime has two seasons and can be watched on Netflix, which describes the story as:
Living and playing in a world that's a little weird, a group of cute and tiny critter friends spend their days laughing and helping each other out.
