Animation Crazy has removed the new anime from its roster.

The new dark comedy anime series “Chainsmoker Cat” has been pulled from the Animation Crazy streaming platform in Hong Kong as it violates the rule that bans online ads for smoking and tobacco usage. Animation Crazy is a Taiwan based streaming service run by the gaming and anime community website Bahamut.

Why was Chainsmoker Cat removed from the Hong Kong based streaming service?

The Taiwan based animation streaming platform Animation Crazy announced in a Facebook post on 17 August that it has received a letter from the Hong Kong Department of Health stating that the Chainsmoker Cat anime violates the Smoking (Public Health) Ordinance that puts a ban on online advertisements of smoking. Due to this, the streaming service immediately removed the anime from its roster in Hong Kong.

In Hong Kong, all forms of smoking product ads are banned from being released or shared online under the Smoking (Public Health) Ordinance. Violating the ordinance can lead to a fine of HK$50,000 and an extra HK$1,500 for each day the violation continues.

They also apologised to viewers in Hong Kong for the inconvenience and urged them to consider applying for a refund if their rights have been violated.

However, the Chainsmoker Cat anime remains on the Animation Crazy platform in Taiwan, which means the removal is only limited to Hong Kong.

The Chainsmoker Cat anime is a dark comedy that centres around a few anthropomorphic cat girls who smoke and abuse various types of drugs to cope with their harsh reality. The series has already faced some backlash all over the world for its contents.

The anime is based on Nyan Nyan Factory’s manga series, which began publishing in February 2023 in Kodansha’s Weekly Young Magazine. Seven Seas Entertainment publishes the manga in English, and describes the story as:

Where there’s smoke, there’s a catgirl chainsmoking in this comedy manga! A look at the daily troubles of one catgirl and her attempts to get her life together.

Welcome to Yani’s apartment. Please don’t mind the smell. Yani is a catgirl with a seriously bad smoking habit. Every time she tries to quit, she becomes weak to the cravings and gives in almost instantly.

Behind on her rent and unable to hold down a job, her friends and sister rally around to help her out. But when she’s using her pee to put out cigarette fires, they may just have their work cut out for them.

Will she ever get her life together, or is she doomed to live as a chainsmoking slob forever?
