Creator Hideaki Anno’s comment revealed this detail about the upcoming project.
It was announced in December 2025 that a 13-minute anime short will be released at the EVANGELION:30+ event, which is the 30th anniversary event of the renowned Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise. The latest update from Evangelion’s social media team has revealed that Asuka Langley Soryu will be this short film’s central character.
Hideaki Anno’s comment confirmed Asuka being the lead of this project
On 20 January, the main social media account of Evangelion posted an illustration of the project’s backdrop, which features a small Japanese theater titled Hakone Yumoto Performance Theater. Anno’s company, Khara’s secondary X (formerly Twitter) account then reposted the picture with a comment from the company director, in which he confirms that Asuka is the main character of the upcoming short film.
Unfortunately, other details about the new short remain hidden. We do know that the 13-minute short film will be shown exclusively at the EVANGELION:30+ event in Japan, which will take place from 21-23 February. The short will be screened once per day at the Stage Area during the event. However, we don’t know if it will be released globally anytime soon.
Hideaki Anno is the supervisor and script writer for the upcoming short anime film. Naoyuki Asano directs the project, while Kazuya Tsurumaki, Shinji Higuchi, and Kazuki Todoroki are also listed as supervisors.
