The sci-fi mecha anime’s newest instalment will be released sometime within 2026.
15 years after its last original video animation (OVA), the “Armored Trooper VOTOMS” franchise is getting a new anime project entitled “Armored Trooper VOTOMS: Die Graue Hexe”.
The announcement was revealed through the official Armored Trooper VOTOMS X (formerly Twitter) account with a teaser visual. It will air sometime within 2026.
What's “Armored Trooper VOTOMS: Die Graue Hexe” all about?
The “Die Grau Hexe” (The Grey Witch) animation project’s format is currently unspecified, so it’s up in the air if the next instalment will either be an anime series or film.
However, it has been confirmed that the project is set to be released in commemoration of studio Sunrise’s 50th anniversary, and is a part of a series of projects for studio Sunrise’s 50th anniversary celebration spanning from 2026 to 2028.
“Die Grau Hexe” will be made in collaboration with Production I.G, a studio known for its titles like “Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex”, “Haikyu!!”, and “Kaiju No.8”.
Frequent Production I.G collaborator and celebrated director Mamoru Oshii will be directing the upcoming VOTOMS instalment. Oshii is known for directing the cult classic “Angel’s Egg” 1985 film, the original “Ghost in the Shell” 1995 film, as well as the original “Urusei Yatsura” television series, which aired from 1981 to 1986.
There is no information explaining what “Die Grau Hexe” is going to be; whether it will follow the mainline story, or feature a whole new plot altogether. However, we can expect future updates to fill in the gap.
The “Armored Trooper VOTOMS” franchise is set in the Astragius Galaxy, where two nations, the Gilgamesh and Barant, have been locked in a century-old galactic war now settled by an uneasy truce.
Each entry follows the pilots of the war’s common weapon: a humanoid combat vehicle known for its brittle armor and combustible artificial muscle liquid. Seen as human fodder in the grand scheme of war, each pilot fights for survival in every encounter, while unveiling secrets and conspiracies that could turn the tide.
