Popular light novel author Yomi Hirasaka, known for titles such as A Salad Bowl of Eccentrics, Haganai, and A Sister’s All You Need has announced his retirement from writing. His previously announced retirement was confirmed in a recent X (formerly Twitter) post.
Why is Yomi Hirasaka retiring?
In his post, Hirasaka explained that he always planned to gain financial independence through his writing and retire early. His first novel came out in 2004, and he has been writing for more than two decades.
Hirasaka’s co-worker and author Shirow Shiratori also commented on his retirement, saying that although he is sad about it, as a fan, he can’t help but accept after how incredibly A Salad Bowl of Eccentrics ended.
Hirasaka’s works are often classified as romcoms or slice-of-life, and features an eccentric ensemble cast. His first novel series is Haunted! (2004-2005), followed by Sora ni Usagi ga Noboru Koro (2006), Nekuroma (2007-2008), and Ranobe-bu (2008-2009).
His more popular works include: Haganai (2009-2015), A Sister’s All You Need (2015-2020), and A Salad Bowl of Eccentrics (2021-2026).
His most recent and most popular work is A Salad Bowl of Eccentrics, which published its 10th and last volume in July 2026. The novels are illustrated by Kantoku. The series also has a manga adaptation by Kōtaro Yamada. The novels received an anime adaptation in 2024. Crunchyroll streams the anime and describes the story as:
Sosuke Kaburaya is a detective struggling to make ends meet. While on a case, he happens upon Sara da Odin, a princess from another world who wields magical powers.
