The final piece of the series is also related to Rudo’s father.

In the previous chapter of the Gachiakuta manga, we learned about Enjin’s past and how he met Rudo’s father, Alto, and how he got his Vital Instrument from him.

In the latest chapter, we take a deeper dive into their connection and how Enjin met Alto one more time, when he was almost on his last breath. However, before leaving with a then-baby Rudo, Alto gave Enjin an extremely powerful Vital Instrument.

What happened in Gachiakuta Chapter 166?

Enjin tells his co-worker about his dream (Image: Kei Urana/ Kodansha).

The chapter opens with a now 13-year-old Enjin sitting on the edge of a cliff with the umbrella he got from Alto. His co-worker asks why he uses the umbrella even when it’s not raining. Enjin answers that he finds it comforting. We learn that other than his job as a guard at the tower, Enjin also has other odd jobs because he needs money. He wants to get tattoos and help kids who have been sold into slavery. His co-worker says that Enjin is too green.

Another reason why Enjin waits by the cliff every day is because he wants to find the man who helped him and thank him, because after receiving the name Enjin from him, his life has gotten better. He then wonders if he should quit this job and look for something that will get him into the polluted zones. His co-worker suggests he go to the Cleaners. If you’re a Giver, Cleaners have no age requirement, but if you’re not, then you have to be at least 18 to join. Suddenly, it starts to rain and the man says Enjin was smart to bring the umbrella. He calls for Enjin to come inside, but the boy is looking off into the distance, as if he found someone.

In the present, we see Enjin entering the parking lot where Rudo and Mymo are facing off. Back in the past, Enjin approaches the hooded figure that is Alto, but he looks beaten and bloodied. Looking at the boy, Alto says that before long, his body will break down, and if he continues to stay on the ground, the baby in his arms will also die. Enjin asks if he is dying and wants to express his gratitude for what he did. Suddenly, Alto throws something at Enjin. The boy looks at it and realises that it’s a wrist watch, and has the Watchman series logo etched under it.

Alto tells Enjin to take it and hide it. He asks Enjin to never tell anyone he has it and never to give it to anyone. Most importantly, he tells Enjin never to use it. When people see a watch, they generally think of one superpower (likely time control). But whoever uses it will have a massive price to pay. So he can’t use it, not even to help someone else. Enjin listens to Alto and looks at the baby in his arms, which is baby Rudo. At present, Rudo has used his power to transform into a wolf-like creature.

Enjin looks at him, ready to attack Gountess and thinks that the words “don’t push the button” will make people want to push the button even more. Even though he resisted all this while, this might be the time to use the Watchman series instrument, which is an actual watch. To save Rudo, Enjin finally activates it, the Vital Instrument named Time Walk. In the final panel, we see Enjin vowing to make himself worthy of the name Alto gave him.

What to expect from Gachiakuta Chapter 167?

With each new chapter, Gachiakuta manages to catch me by surprise. When I learned about Enjin’s connection with Alto, I understood why he recognised Rudo’s gloves and wanted to protect him from the get go. But the fact that Alto actually gave Enjin another part of the Watchman series completely floored me. In the next chapter we will likely find out Time Walk’s power, but judging by the name, I would guess it gives the user the ability to control time or move through time freely. I can’t wait to find out more about the Watchman Series, but first, Mymo must bee defeated.
